Overview
SickleSafe is a health management application designed for people living with sickle cell disease. We built SickleSafe with your privacy as a first principle.
All personal data you enter into SickleSafe is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage. We do not transmit your personal health data to any remote server. Community posts and messages are transmitted via our servers so they can be seen by other users, but your health logs, Medical ID, and profile data never leave your device.
Data We Collect
The following information may be stored locally on your device when you use SickleSafe:
- Your name and date of birth (used to personalise your Medical ID)
- Health logs — including pain levels, hydration records, and medication tracking
- Notification preferences
- Community posts and messages you choose to share within the app (note: community content is transmitted via community infrastructure so it can be received by other users — your health logs and Medical ID remain on-device only and are never transmitted)
All personal health data (health logs, Medical ID, notification preferences) is stored exclusively via AsyncStorage on your device. It is not uploaded to or accessible from any SickleSafe server.
SOS & Circle of Care Notifications
When you activate the SOS feature or send a message to your Circle of Care, a notification is delivered to your contacts via Apple Push Notification Service (APNs). No health data or location data is included in these notifications.
Data We Do Not Collect
SickleSafe does not collect or store the following:
- Location data — the app does not access or record your location
- Contacts — the app does not access your contacts list
- Calendar data — the app does not read from or write to your calendar
- Biometric data — Face ID or Touch ID may be used to unlock your Medical ID in-session as an authentication mechanism only. The result of biometric authentication is never stored or transmitted
Third-Party Services
SickleSafe makes read-only requests to the following public APIs to provide educational content within the app:
- ClinicalTrials.gov API — to display publicly available clinical trial information relevant to sickle cell disease
- OpenFDA API — to display publicly available medication information
No personal data is sent to either of these services. All requests are read-only and fetch publicly available information only.
Camera
SickleSafe may request access to your camera for the following limited purposes:
- Attaching photos to community messages or posts
- Scanning medication barcodes for quick medication entry
Media captured for your personal health logs is stored locally on your device only. Media attached to community posts or messages is transmitted via our servers to be visible to other users.
Children
SickleSafe is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has used SickleSafe, please contact us at privacy@sicklesafe.co.uk.
Your Rights
Because your data is stored locally on your device, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing app data from your device settings.
If you would like to request deletion of your account and any associated data held by SickleSafe (for example, any community content), please email support@sicklesafe.co.uk with the subject line "Account Deletion Request". We will action your request within 30 days.
UK GDPR & Your Rights
SickleSafe processes your personal data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The lawful basis for processing is your consent, given when you create your account. You have the right to access, correct, or delete the data stored on your device at any time. To submit a formal data request, email privacy@sicklesafe.co.uk.
